Our story topic for our Hiki No story was initially all about the early college program, but later on we decided to pivot our goal and put our focus on our primary interviewee, Trey Carney. My view on the intentions to communicate to our audience would be to at first inform them of the early college program without making it sound like a commercial, and then maybe diving deeper into our interview subject and show that even though he's an early college professor, he has other passions outside of teaching that are worth reporting. I think that our audience could be given a different perspective on their teachers and would get to see one example of what life is like outside of the school atmosphere for a teacher.
When considering improvement from when we did our rough cut to when we did our final cut, I think we've definitely improved our story to a certain degree. We did find our story the day before it was due, but even though we had a very short time margin to complete this, I think we definitely completed it to the best of its ability. The overall story improved no doubt. I think the story itself had a good flow, but we just couldn't deliver it in the way that we wanted to. Our voiceover was pretty good in both the rough cut and the final cut, but the audio levels weren't as equal as I wanted them to be. We 100% needed more B-Roll in both the rough cut and final cut. I'm disappointed that we couldn't film any additional B-Roll for our final cut, as we had to end up using the B-Roll from the rough cut which is kind of embarrassing. We could have improved our editing techniques in a way so there was more padding in the beginning and a little more breathing room, but I think it improved from our rough cut.
I agree with all of our critique results as I feel our strongest points were the message and the voiceover. However I feel like we should have gotten a little but of a higher score on our 5 Point Flow of Story. At the same time, we did put it together in a day, so there wasn't much we could do in the video itself, but I feel like we have a strong flow once we get it pieced together. I definitely think we could have improved on B-Roll, I really wish we got more B-Roll of Mr. Carney rapping or at least anything else other than him teaching in the same classroom. It maybe would have even be cool if we got B-Roll of him teaching at Waimea High School because he says he teaches at both schools. It's funny though because when we filmed the B-Roll we had, I was so confident that we were set for B-Roll because of all the different shots we got. Now that we pieced it together, it's the exact opposite and now I'm disappointed that I didn't get more. Remember kids: There's. Never. Enough. B-Roll.
